The entertainment scene in 2026 does not resemble the same scene five years ago. Surprisingly, the drivers for these shifts are not necessarily from the avenues where most analysts thought they would be coming. It looks like streaming services are competing for subscriber counts, and social networks measure their popularity with engagement numbers, but the changes people are making to how they consume entertainment are happening quietly.

Japanese role-playing games have been amongst the fastest growing genres of entertainment. Not only is the growth impressive, but it indicates that there is a disconnect between what audiences want vs. what the industry thinks that the audience wants. In an age of infinite scrolling and three-second attention spans, consumers are investing anywhere from 60-100 hours into a single narrative experience. This demonstrates that the commonly held belief of short attention spans is true but only part of the reality. Instead of short attention spans, consumers are discerning in how they choose to devote their undivided attention.

What JRPGs provide that modern day entertainment tends to lack is a sense of deep immersion. While one could argue that a streaming miniseries may have kept the attention of its audience for 10-12 hours over the course of a season, JRPGs will hold the attention of their audiences for over 60+ hours, but the engagement level with the JRPG is considered to be an active form of engagement vs. passive. During the course of the game, the player is making choices, putting together strategies, and developing relationships with multiple characters through the experiences that they have shared with them over the course of a large amount of time. Participating in stories as opposed to simply watching an shows proves to have greater impact than even the passive entertainment industry cares to admit.

The gamification explosion throughout fitness, education, corporate training has its roots in the mechanics found within JRPG’s: experience points, skill trees, achievement systems, progress bars, etc. All of these were created or popularized through Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs). Any app that gives you XP for completing a task is using the design principles introduced by Dragon Quest in 1986. While these systems may not always understand or realize the origin of the mechanics they are using, there is therefore, indeed a direct lineage to JRPG design principles.

Hubs for interactive entertainment like Kingbet89 gaming hub highlight this convergence of gaming mechanics to mainstream entertainment (award loop, progression system, engagement frameworks which all JRPGs have perfected and are now foundationally present in all digital forms of entertainment; mobile apps, social platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) and education technology (Kahoot, EdPuzzle, etc.)).

Adding the music component creates a cultural dimension that transcends video gaming. JRPG Soundtracks are independent cultural products divorced from the games they accompany. Orchestral concerts of game music occur in sold out venues across the globe. Composers such as Nobuo Uematsu and Yoko Shimomura enjoy a name recognition that transcends gaming and serious music appreciation. Their works are studied at universities and performed by professional orchestras with the same level of respect as films scores.

The demographic shift that supports this trend, is the adults who are currently avid JRPG gamers. Many of them are professionals (in their mid 30s-50s) with established purchasing power and established cultural influence; they are not a niche market but rather a large consumer demographic, with fond memories of what quality entertainment is and a willingness to pay for experiences that meet or exceed that standard.

The genre’s continued expansion, is being aided through indie developers who are creating JRPG-like games that blend Japanese design principles with broader cultural perspectives. Titles such as Sea of Stars, Chained Echoes, and Cosmic Star Heroine, are examples of how the JRPG formula transcends the country of Japan-based dependant upon the designs. The design principles remain true regardless of the cultural aesthetic.

Trends suggest that the principles that JRPGs have always upheld; deep engagement, meaningful progression, narrative traction, emotional reward will continue to make inroads against quick-hit entertainment. Consumers are tired of feeling empty, after consuming content. Consumers want to experience real emotions (and JRPGs have been delivering on this promise for the past 40 years) yet the entertainment industry is still trying to replicate what JRPGs do.

This demographic change is particularly interesting because it goes against most common beliefs about who uses entertainment. The JRPG fanbase is now older and has become extremely influential. Many of the fans in the JRPG space have been fans for 20 to 30 years and are now very wealthy. They are not a small, niche group that doesn’t matter. They are a large part of the overall consumer market and have experienced what it is like to enjoy high-quality and they will pay for it.

The independent development movement has helped bring new audiences to JRPGs by developing games with JRPG inspirations that use modern design and incorporate many different cultures into their games. The examples provided (Sea of Stars, Chained Echoes, and Cosmic Star Heroine) all strongly demonstrate that the basic JRPG format works in both North America and the other countries where JRPGs originate. The basic principles of JRPG development apply to all developers, whether the Japanese aesthetics are very different from the visual style or cultural references in a game.

Subscription services in gaming have benefited JRPGs more than any other genre of gaming. By providing a wide variety of games at a low monthly rate, users are now able to become more familiar with unfamiliar JRPGs at less risk than they would be able to without a service. Previously, when a user may have been willing to pay $60 for an unfamiliar genre of video game, they can now try out many JRPGs through their subscription service which will lead to new discovery methods and long-term usage of JRPGs.

The merchandise and other revenue associated with JRPGs have become a large business category in addition to the sales of video games. Merchandise like soundtrack albums, collectible art books, fantasy figurines, clothing partnerships, and live concerts all help supplement the game’s revenues and keep JRPG franchises alive until the next major video game release. The revenue model that surrounds JRPGs has significantly diversified the business of making JRPGs and makes it more financially viable than the traditional business model of only relying on video game sales for the financial health of a JRPG company.

The transition to the subscription model for video gaming has had a positive effect on RPGs (JRPGs). Subscriptions providing the ability to access large game libraries at a fixed monthly fee have minimized the risk of playing an unknown title in a different genre (i.e. RPG), as a player who would have previously been reluctant to spend $60 on an unknown genre can now sample dozens of RPG titles through available subscriptions, creating discovery paths that promote long-term engagement and loyalty to that genre.
